Compensation for phony vodka: $2.7 million USD
Three Croatian companies, ‘Straža’, ‘Jedinstvo’ and ‘Kočiš Commerce’, have to pay $2.7 million USD compensation to Swedish vodka producer Absolut, as ruled by the High Commercial Court, because they were involved in the counterfeit activities
Recently, in Croatia, one of the harshest judgments for compensation of losses due to the illegal sale of counterfeit goods was ruled. The High Commercial Courts ruled against three Croatian companies – “Straža” glass factory from Hum on the Sutla River, “Jedinstvo” packaging from Ivanac and “Kočiš Commerce” from Osijek – for a total of $2,691,027.01 USD which will need to be paid to the Swedish alcoholic beverage producer “V&S Group” due to counterfeit and illegal sale of their most recognized brand, Absolut vodka. The decision in the case, which one of the largest alcoholic beverage producers in the world filed against these companies ten years ago, proves that Croatia was a trafficking center in the mid-90 of over 2.8 million bottles of the third strongest alcohol brand in the world.
